Role Summary/Purpose: The Electrical Drives / Inverter Design Engineer will design, analyze, validate and support large (> 1MW) electrical drives and utility scale solar photovoltaic inverters.
Essential Responsibilities: As the Electrical Drives / Inverter Design Engineer, you will:


  • Define product requirements and concepts
  • Work independently or lead a small team to execute design and deployment
  • Perform detailed electrical and power electronics design activities
  • Develop and implement product validation test plans
  • Develop system models to evaluate product concepts and design
  • Design, select, specify and validate critical power components (e.g. IGBTs, diodes, capacitors, inductors, contactors, fuses, etc.)
  • Perform power circuit protection and coordination studies, circuit design, and component selection
  • Participate in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and risk assessment activities
  • Work with mechanical engineering to define component placement and wiring for optimal structural and thermal design
  • Provide technical clarification of designs to suppliers
  • Support the manufacturing, sourcing and quality departments to test and qualify components and assemblies for production and resolve issues as needed to maintain product quality
  • Support product commissioning engineers and commissioning activities
  • Work with product support teams to determine root cause of component or system failures and implement corrective actions to meet product reliability goals for customers
  • Work with external consultants and third parties to achieve certification of product designs (UL (Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc.), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), CE, etc.)
  • Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an engineering environment with a minimum of 3 years of experience in design of drives, solar inverters or other power electronics products

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% domestically and internationally
  • Additional Eligibility Qualifications: GE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening. Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen.
    Desired Characteristics:
  • Experience with solid state power converters, electrical systems and power distribution
  • Familiarity with simulation tools such as dynamic system simulators (MATLAB / Simulink) and circuit simulators (SPICE) and their use in modeling power electronic devices and systems
  • Demonstrated ability to meet goals and objectives
  • Effective technical documentation skills
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Proven interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Advanced technical degree
  • Experience with drives and/or photovoltaic system technologies and standards
  • Experience with large (> 500 kW) power converters
  • Familiarity with software and controls of power converters
  • Familiarity with instrumentation and measurement of power converters
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70 and 70E
  • Familiarity with electric machine modeling and control
  • Familiarity with NEC (Nippon Electric Company), IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), UL, and CSA regulatory standards
