The Lead Design Engineer will work with Lubrication Systems, Wind Drives and Structures. They will lead and execute engineering design work on wind turbine lubrication, cooling and filter systems mainly in the area of wind turbine gearboxes. This individual will utilize experience or expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and have the ability to effect short-term and some long-term business goals.
Essential Responsibilities: In addition you will:

  • Be responsible for many tasks including the conceptual design stage through prototyping to the serial implementation and support of the installed fleet
  • Design gearbox lubrication systems incl. pumps, filter, cooler, internal and external piping/hoses, nozzles, etc.
  • Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing on the production
  • Be responsible for design, development and testing (working with test center) to prove out component functionality and reliability
  • Create and revise of drawing / specifications / design practices for wind turbine lubrication, cooling and filter systems. Apply GE design processes and Six Sigma methodology
  • Establish processes, tests and requirements to qualify gearbox lubricants
  • Provide innovative solutions for lubrication systems and complex gearbox internal lubricant distribution methods to meet aggressive production, cost and reliability targets
  • Be accountable for optimization and improvement of existing components
  • Manage risk to meet aggressive project goals
  • Work with certification and testing institutes, support customer and due diligence activities
  • Work cross-functionally with quality teams, manufacturing engineers, sourcing, planning, field support and others to improve first time yield
  • Investigate causes for component interferences, functional failures, and resolution of parts lists discrepancies
  • Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical, Structural or Material Engineering (OR a High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 4 years of experience in Engineering)
  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering or other technical experience
  • Minimum of 3 years in lubrication system design
  • Additional Eligibility Qualifications: GE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening. Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen.
    Desired Characteristics:
  • Experienced in 3D-CAD tools like UG and flow simulation software like Flowmaster
  • Strong background in fluid dynamics, lubrication system design and lubricants
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Technical drawing and design interpretation background
  • Ability to work with global team members across cultural boundaries
  • Six Sigma Green Belt Certification or quality certification
  • Fluent English written and spoken
  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Structural or Material Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Basic knowledge of wind turbine design, components, assembly and manufacture
  • Basic knowledge in wind turbine gearbox lubricants incl. their specific properties, performance requirements, etc.
  • GE Business tools and practices expertise
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and challenging conditions. Strong desire and ability to drive improvement and change
  • Ability and willingness to travel
