Role Summary/Purpose: | As a research engineer you will conduct applied research in the areas of optics and instrumentation. The research will be initially focused on absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and other optics based sensor systems and high temperature optical design. You will need to interact with senior scientists to model, develop prototype, test and analyze optical sensor systems. |
Essential Responsibilities: | The successful candidate will be a member of the Global Research team developing and conducting experiments in the area of optical systems. The candidate will also develop prototype sensor systems for GE businesses. The key responsibilities include - Work with the GE businesses and GRC teams and principal scientists/engineers to formulate project plans for assigned projects and work with customers to track progress toward project deliverables. - Developing simulation models for analysis of optics systems (ZEMAX, Lumerical) - Opto-mechanical designs for high temperature optical systems design - Experience developing new optical systems that utilize either existing commercially available equipment or novel optical solutions developed independently - Setting up room temperature or high temperature optical experiments - Analysis of the data and development of physics based models to explain the data - Effective communication of results by preparing reports, making presentations describing the analysis performed, solutions developed - Converting these results into patents and publications |
Qualifications/Requirements: | - Doctorate in Optical Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, or related discipline or a Masters degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Applied Physics. - Strong background & interest in instrumentation & sensing techniques - Demonstrated experience with optics, hardware instrumentation, independently setting up and performing experiments, variety of data collection & analysis systems. - Knowledge of board level mixed signal circuit design & testing. - Demonstrated experience in use of optical modeling software (ZEMAX, Lumerical Solutions) - Demonstrated analytical, experimental, and problem solving skills. |
