Role Summary/Purpose: As the Manager for the Energy Systems Lab, you will lead a team of approximately 8-12 scientists and engineers at GE Global Research - Niskayuna within the Thermal Systems Organization. The focus will be to invent, analyze, and prototype the world's best energy cycles, including gas turbines, jet engines waste heat recovery, geothermal, solar thermal, wind, coal, and oil & gas with particular focus on the North American market.
Essential Responsibilities:

As Lab Manager, you are expected to partner with the technology leaders, principal engineers and businesses on the long-term energy technology vision, drive energy system inventions, and transfer these inventions from the research center to the business. It will be important to establish key internal and external collaborations, and to recruit top technical talent.

As the Laboratory Manager for the Energy Systems Lab, you will:


  • Provide and expand technical leadership for the modeling and testing of energy systems technologies, including gas turbines, wind turbines, geothermal, solar, coal, and waste heat recovery; aviation systems technologies, including thermal management and engine architecture; and oil & gas technologies, including production, transportation, and utilization.

  • Build a world-class team recognized as the center of excellence in thermodynamic and economic modeling, and in energy system prototype testing.

  • Work closely with the technology leader and the GE business leadership to develop/refine the vision and strategy for the Energy Systems Lab, and alignment of that vision and strategy with other Thermal labs as well as appropriate labs in the Aero, Combustion and Mechanical Systems Organizations; appropriate labs in the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering domain; and appropriate labs in the Electrical Technology Systems domain.

  • Recruit top talent, mentor and coach team members; staff interdisciplinary teams by drawing appropriate resources from across GE.

  • Drive technology program execution and technology transition to the business, meeting deliverables, budgets, and schedules, while also contributing technically to projects.

  • Develop networks in the GE businesses, with external commercial customers, and with academia and external research partners.

  • Represent and promote GE's energy and aviation research in the technical community.

  • Exemplify GE leadership values and make full use of GE initiatives.
Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • At least five years of relevant experience in research and development in energy technologies or related technologies.

  • Technical project leadership experience.

  • Demonstrated impact, leadership capability and ability to lead, build and energize cross-functional, global teams in high-impact technology.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand customer needs and industry trends; simplify strategy into specific actions, make decisions, and communicate priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence at senior levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to grow and develop people.

Desired Characteristics:
  • Doctorate in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt certification or in progress.
  • Domain knowledge in energy technologies.
  • Deep expertise in contemporary thermodynamic and economic modeling methodologies.
  • Real experience in designing, building, and testing large-scale prototypes of energy products.
  • Strong network among Department of Energy leadership, with a track record of winning DOE funding.
  • Strong network with relevant National Labs, universities, and energy companies.
  • Business experience from a GE business system team, in particular GE Power and Water, GE Aviation or GE Oil & Gas.
  • Strong working knowledge of the relevant products and processes in GE businesses, in particular GE Power and Water, GE Aviation and GE Oil & Gas.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Optimistic, can-do attitude.
  • Passion and aptitude for stretching and growing people.
