The Lead Controls Engineer will be an integral part of the wind product & design process, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager of the Control Systems organization. This will be a global engineering role, the scope includes design & enhancement of wind turbine control systems, coordinating with renewable product line and services team on product needs, requirements flow down leading to design, implementation and validation of control systems.
Essential Responsibilities: Additional responsibilities will include coordinating & communicating site validation activities with the services team and customers. The broad scope of responsibility provides an opportunity to optimize turbine performance and operability.

In addition you will:

  • Assist development and enhancement of controls technologies, such as Advanced Loads Controls, Model Based Controls, extreme loads control, covering functional requirements definition, flow down, preliminary design development & documentation
  • Interface with loads and incorporate wind turbine and wind farm operability requirements into the design, as part of control system design
  • Work with controls product line personnel to flow down desired capability into requirements & preliminary design that can be executed through detailed design & implementation. Focus will be on next generation turbine / system concepts
  • Work with Product Service & Warranty and Renewable Services team to define control system needs for the installed base
  • Engage with turbine platform and services team and investigate complex controls issues, identify & implement improvements in the controls strategies
  • Assist/guide in conceptual, detailed design, implementation and validation of the controls features, as a lead engineer and part of the controls team
  • Lead the effort of defining / documenting turbine operability & constraints, as part of the controls team. This is creating the foundation on which controls architecture and approach can be modified to meet goals of improved transient response
  • Work closely with PE and senior design engineers to develop strategy for high visibility tasks (RCA, new concepts for fast track design needs) and represent the team in discussions and reviews with renewables leadership
  • Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 3 years real-time controls design or modeling experience
  • Additional Eligibility Qualifications: GE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening. Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen.
    Desired Characteristics:
  • Strong knowledge of turbine control system software and wind turbine first principles
  • Proficiency in control system software requirements definition, requirements flow down and design
  • Six Sigma Greenbelt certification or equivalent quality certification with demonstrated quality focus. Meets or exceeds schedule and quality targets
  • Master’s Degree in Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Experience in design and/or modeling of controls systems
  • Minimum of years of wind industry experience with a focus on controls systems
  • Familiar with FLEX / Matlab / Simulink
  • Strong analytical approach to problem solving
  • Ability to lead in a matrix organization
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to succeed in a global team environment. Team player with strong communication skills
